Damp creeping down a back-bedroom wall after a wet week? Peak Roofing is a roofing company based in Lancashire, covering Accrington, Oswaldtwistle and Great Harwood. Over half of Accrington’s homes predate 1919. Plenty of its roofs sit on houses that have stood for more than a century.

Accrington roofs: long rows and old houses
Terraces dominate here. The 2021 Census puts 55% of Accrington’s 13,865 households in terraced homes, with 24% in semis, 11% detached and 10% flats. Their age comes from the Valuation Office Agency: 52% predate 1919, and 43% predate 1900. In England and Wales as a whole, just 21% are that old.
New building has been thin since then. Just 16% of homes are from 1983 onwards, and only 7% from 2000 onwards. Many roofs have therefore had decades of repairs, some good and some not. On older slate we expect rusted fixings, tired lead and pointing gone from the stacks. Back extensions commonly have a felt flat roof that needs its own attention.
What we check first on an Accrington roof
- Gutters along the row An overflowing gutter on a terrace soaks the front wall and shows as damp along the bedroom ceiling.
- Valley linings Where two slopes meet, constant wet and moss can push water over worn lead or felt.
- Stack pointing and pots Mortar washed out of an old stack lets rain into the chimney breast, sometimes in two houses at once.
- Rear flat roof joints Where a felt roof meets the back wall, the upstand often cracks first and lets water behind it.
How often Accrington roofs get wet
Count the wet days rather than the millimetres. For Accrington, the Met Office climate records come from Stonyhurst, the closest station. It logs about 175 wet days a year, each with 1 mm of rain or more: nearly one day in every two. The UK average is 159. A slate roof that rarely gets a dry week tends to hold moss in its shaded valleys. Moss then slows water down just where it should run off.
Accrington and Hyndburn conservation areas
Hyndburn Borough Council looks after ten conservation areas in all. In Accrington they are Accrington Town Centre and Christ Church. Oswaldtwistle has Rhyddings, The Straits and Stanhill, while Great Harwood has its own area plus Tottleworth. Listed houses add another layer: 21 Cannon Street, a Grade II town house of about 1860, keeps a hipped slate roof. Got a home in one of those areas, or a listed one? Hyndburn’s planning team ought to know before slate is swapped for anything else.

Questions
Accrington roofs: questions
Can you re-roof just my house in an Accrington terrace?
Usually, yes. The new roof is finished against the party wall so it meets next door’s slates properly. It’s worth telling your neighbours first, as scaffolding and noise affect them too. See re-roofing.
Do you cover Oswaldtwistle and Great Harwood too?
Yes. Alongside Accrington, both are towns we cover as Lancashire roofers. Both have conservation areas listed by Hyndburn Borough Council, so tell us your street when you contact us and we’ll bear that in mind.
Why is there a damp stripe along the top of my bedroom wall?
That line often points to the eaves. A sagging or blocked gutter, or a rotten fascia board behind it, lets rain spill down the wall instead of the downpipe. Replacing the run in uPVC is a common fix. See guttering and fascias.
